Riley County Law Board received an email from the community asking for clarification on how RCPD releases information to the public after a press release about Fentanyl overdoses in Riley County.
There have been 8-10 overdoses on fentanyl in the last 3 months in Riley County. 8 have been confirmed via toxicology report.
Director of RCPD Brian Peete:
Media does not influence when information can be released. Information will be released publicly when it has been confirmed, and would not jeopardize a case. Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson explains.
The Law Board will consider updating protocols on informational releases to the public.
RCPD also spoke about the dangers of using non-prescription drugs recreationally. Peete related how things have changed in Law Enforcement when it comes to substances entering a community.
Peete also cautioned the community about using a prescription medication that is not prescribed.
RCPD participates in the One Pill Can Kill campaign. Peete advises that anyone using non-prescription drugs recreationally should immediately stop, and addicts should seek out treatment within the community and can reach out to RCPD for more information.
