An Ogden home sustained significant fire and smoke damage Tuesday. Riley County Fire District #1 and Manhattan Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at 203 William Drive around noon Tuesday. Crews found visible smoke and flames coming from a single family residence and a backyard chicken coop. City of Manhattan Fire Department crews arrived on scene first, aggressively attacked the fire, and brought it under control within 15 minutes.

RCFD #1 Deputy Fire Chief, John Martens, said a heating lamp started a fire in the chicken coop, which was located close to the home, allowing the fire to extend to the exterior siding, soffit, and into the attic space. Residents were able to quickly and safely exit the home. All but one chicken escaped the fire. The home sustained major smoke damage throughout, and significant fire damage in two rooms. Initial damage and loss is estimated at $200,000.
