A North Carolina man, arrested last fall for traveling to Kansas to meet up with a child he met online, has been sentenced to prison.

According to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Derrick Yarnell Mayfield was sentenced Tuesday to 41 months in prison. He’s required to register for life as a sex offender and has been sentenced to lifetime post release supervision.

Police were alerted on Oct. 31 of a possible incident of child exploitation. Authorities learned Mayfield had traveled to Lake Wabaunsee to meet up with the child and evidence found on scene, led to his arrest on charges of aggravated indecent liberties, contributing to a child’s misconduct and unlawful visual depiction of a child.

The child was placed into protective custody.
